Thoughts and notes about our family's weekly trips to the Center Avenue Community Garden, and other happenings around Martinez (and the East Bay). The garden is located at 333 Center Avenue, on the border of Pacheco and Martinez. (Note: CACG = Center Avenue Community Garden)

Saturday Workday at the Garden
Mike and Jenn pitchforked new wood chips around the Northwest portion of the garden while Terry hauled more piles for them.
Terry in his familiar spot - driving the tractor!
A new lime tree was donated to the garden, and planted in the Northwest corner. It hopes to get a couple of citrus friends planted nearby soon.
David built a new retaining wall out of local maplewood along the Eastern edge of the garden. Nice work, David!
Brenna and Colin chatted with David while he spread wood chips around. The kids love the "Social Garden"!
Colin and Brenna doing a great job of sharing the watering can!

Local Links
Here's what I've been reading about lately:
- Local photographer Jason was out again at Hidden Lakes Park. He took some great shots of the otter family that has taken up residence.
- Here's an article by Jim Caroompas on Martinez Patch about the local fire station closure.
- Here's a cool picture of Mt. Diablo from the Pleasant Hill Patch site. The Center Avenue Community Garden has a similar view from the Northwest corner.
- If you haven't done so already, you should definitely check out www.claycord.com for current topics around the Concord-Walnut Creek-Martinez area. This site has been around a long time, and always has the inside scoop on local topics.
- Here's a link to one of the better sports blogs in the Bay Area.
- I haven't been out there yet, but here's a link to information about the Lafayette Community Garden.
- Some thoughts on Good Neighbors around Pleasant Hill from the Contra Costa Times.

Balance Beams
Here are a few pictures from the garden today, and a few I forgot to post over the Summer at Hidden Lakes Park in Martinez.
You can pretty much make anything a balance beam. Just give it a shot!!

Links!
Here are some of things I've been reading lately. Simply click on the highlighted portion to read the story.
Interesting article about a group looking to use Central Contra Costa County Sanitary District land as a Sustainable Farm (near the Concord Airport).
Check out David's Martinez Permaculture Center Blog.
Otters were spotted in Hidden Lakes Park around Thanksgiving, which is a mile from the CACG. Pictures were posted on the Martinez Patch website.
We've gotten many ideas from this blog called Let the Children Play.
The end of an incredible era at De La Salle High School.
I started a new book this week called Thunderstruck, by one of my favorite writers, Erik Larson.
One of the most inspirational videos I have ever seen, about the father and son Dick and Rick Hoyt, who race together.
A new trail opened up in San Francisco.
