About a year ago, a group of folks at the Center Avenue Garden wanted to create a Hugelkultur Bed, which you can read about on here: http://www.richsoil.com/hugelkultur/, and want the rich soil calls, "the ultimate raised garden bed".
After a lot of man power (and some timely help from Terry's tractor), a year later, we have some tasty veggies growing on top of the raised bed.
Here are some pictures of the progress:

It started with mud. Well, a few weeks prior to that, it started with a lot of digging by many volunteers. But I remember this day when Brenna and Colin decided to go hog wild in the big, muddy hole that would eventually become the Hugelkultur Bed. |
|
It was fun for 20 minutes, but the cold, wet, muddy run home was interesting.... |

Splat. |

Volunteers began setting aside various branches and shrubs that would be ideal for filling in the bed. |
|
When the sun came out, Terry, Bob and others began prepping the bed. They used the tractor to place the large logs that would become the base and walls. |

Over time, a raised bed 'Lasagna' was created, spreading layers of branches and compost, branches and compost. After that, David and others began spreading seeds on top, until.... |
|
Kale, sunflowers and other goodies appeared! |
|
Feel free to climb up the bed, and harvest some kale! |
